Powerful cold-season gusts caused walls to collapse onto flimsy tents housing people uprooted by war in Gaza, killing at least 4 people. These deaths underscores the dangerous living conditions that continue after more than two years of devastating bombardment and critical lack of humanitarian assistance.

Ceasefire Provides Little Relief from Severe Elements

While a truce has been in effect since last fall, aid groups state that Palestinians do not have the adequate shelter required to survive frequent winter storms.

Officials at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which received the bodies, said on this week that the deceased include a pair of adult females, a girl, and a male adult.

Separately, the Gaza health ministry announced on Tuesday that a 12-month-old infant died of extreme cold overnight.

"International actors has allowed us to experience loss of life in every possible way," stated a family member following the burial. "While it is correct the shelling may have temporarily stopped, but we have witnessed all imaginable reasons of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Relatives Crushed in Shelter Collapse

According to Shifa hospital, three members of a one family — elderly a man, his 15-year-old relative, and his daughter-in-law — were fatally injured when an 26-foot high wall collapsed on top of their tent in a area near the sea of the city. At least five additional people were injured in the incident.

Family members on Tuesday started clearing the rubble that had buried their family and rebuilding the temporary homes for those who remained.

Aid Distribution and Ongoing Crisis

The UN and its humanitarian partners were distributing tents, plastic sheeting, warm covers and clothes as well as nutrition and hygiene supplies throughout Gaza, said the relevant UN coordination body.

Most of the population live in improvised tents because their homes were turned into rubble over the course of the hostilities. Humanitarian organizations contend an insufficient amount of building supplies are entering Gaza under the truce.

Casualty Figures After the Truce

Local health authorities, which is part of the administration, reports over four hundred and forty people have been killed by Israeli fire and their bodies taken to hospitals since the truce began. The authority maintains detailed casualty records that are considered generally reliable by UN agencies and independent experts.

A spokesperson for UNICEF, representing the UN children’s agency Unicef, stated on that day that at least one hundred children under the age of 18 – sixty boys and 40 girls – had been lost their lives since the truce began because of armed actions, such as unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, airstrikes, tank shelling and use of live ammunition. Those figures, he explained, reflected cases where sufficient details had been gathered to warrant recording, but the overall count is expected to be greater. He noted that many hundreds of minors had been wounded.

"While 'bombings and shootings have decreased' under the truce, they have not ceased," the spokesperson told journalists at a UN briefing in Geneva by video from the Strip. "So what the world now calls calm would be viewed as a crisis anywhere else," he concluded.

Third Cold Season of Hardship

Gaza’s population of more than two million individuals has been fighting to keep the freezing temperatures and storms at bay while facing shortages of humanitarian aid and a lack of sturdier transitional shelter, which is urgently needed throughout the colder season. It’s the third winter after the war involving the state and the group began on a date in late 2023, when militants stormed into southern Israel and killed approximately 1,200 individuals and abducted 251 others into Gaza.
