New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.

“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”

The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “However, I can share, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that reassures me, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police issued surveillance images earlier this week of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday morning about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his wife just had a baby.

“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd hasn’t played this season, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.

He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was anticipated to become a key part of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on early August and was carted from the field.

Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while working his way back.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He joined Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
