Nationality Breakdown of Vanished Minors

The second and third largest ethnic groups to have gone missing from both places are individuals from Afghanistan followed by Iranian nationals.

Advocacy representatives emphasized that when representing children who have broken free after being trafficked whilst missing, they see how their mental and physical health is permanently harmed by the exploitation they experience during this time.

"For one child to go missing constitutes an complete breakdown of the state to shield the most fragile and abused in their care. These statistics are in the multiple hundreds."

Call for Action to Address the Crisis

Advocates stated greater efforts are required to locate the vanished minors. "They have not chosen to vanish. These children should be engaging in sports in the park and getting ready for their GCSEs, not servicing smuggling networks in circumstances we know involve being tied up, harmed and exploited, and punished by being starved of food."

Regulatory Updates and Ongoing Concerns

In December 2023, subsequent to a extended legal proceeding involving unaccompanied minor refugees missing from all designated facilities, the custom of typically placing children in hotels was declared illegal.
