The Gruesome Cartoon Film Ending That Stays With Fans

Among all the mature animated films I’ve ever viewed, nothing has lingered in my mind quite like the fear-filled ending of a viscerally violent and highly provocative film from 2022 Unicorn Wars.

In the year 2015, this Spain-based filmmaker crafted a dark, melancholy , often savage universe that included some tiny , desolate hints of optimism.

While Unicorn Wars seems like it stemmed from a desire to push animation even more, the director explained that it was rather a try to express a universal, cross-cultural message about “the mutual source of each battle.”

That idea is communicated through a band of vividly colored bears , clearly modeled after a well-known series of lovable characters.

Growing up in a society built around aggression as well as the military-industrial complex, a lot of the bears are obsessed with exterminating unicorns, because of a holy book that tells them they used to be rulers of the woods, before the horned beings drove them out.

Some have not completely bought into the indoctrination, , would rather sample substances and fornicate in the forest.

In contrast to their gentle counterparts, these colorful critters have visible genitals and obvious sex drives.

For a particular particularly cruel, pessimistic creature, the bear named Bluey, the battle with unicorns turns into a road to power — and especially to supremacy over his more tender, nicer brother Tubby.

The character is a bully and an obvious sociopath , and as horror dominates his unit and takes his teammates individually, he seizes increasingly power on his own behalf, in increasingly gory, damaging approaches.

Simultaneously, these mythical beings are experiencing their own horror, through a spreading, deadly beast in their woods.

“In the early stages, it appears as a humorous movie,” the filmmaker commented. “However it turns into a more intense and sad movie. And by the end, it transforms into a terrifying movie.”

The Unicorn Wars commences feeling a bit like one of the more quirky movies by a legendary animator, which find a mischievous joy in allowing drawn beings swear, shoot each other, or engage sexually.

Afterward it evolves into something more like a bleaker work from that creator, with increasingly explicit brutality and a noticeable connection to genuine tragedy of battle.

By the end, it’s a full-on extreme drama carnage.

The fear which makes the film a perfect Halloween viewing kicks in much sooner than that description suggests.

Unicorn Wars is one for the hardcore fans of gore, for lovers of extreme cinema who want to view a film they have not seen on-screen before, and who can handle a narrative that offers unflinching brutality.

View it in a dark room without any distractions, and the conclusion will dig deep within you and linger.
