The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh installment, announced by the BBC.

An upcoming six-episode season written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Belfast this spring, according to the production team.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."

The last season wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been circulating ever since, but official word only came this week.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven begins with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most delicate case to date."

New Character and Complex Case

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.

However, his case could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the background, the teaser suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans watch the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new season."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Martin Compston described being part of the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.

Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

The drama launched in 2012 and became a highly successful television series of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.

Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the new season will premiere.

The conclusion of series six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers said at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the network announced on this week that a new season is now being produced.
