"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the band?" an inquiry pops up. "My request was to ask if I can become their fourth member."

There is only one problem: I also wants to be Haim's additional sibling. Furthermore, we are not alone. Multiple celebrated admirers have also petitioned for the position.

The evidence suggests a special quality is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their career doing sets at neighborhood delis with their parents. Now they're multiple Grammy Award contenders.

Similar to the most iconic ensembles, they're a inseparable unit. Their visuals repeatedly show them walking in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such boundless joy you inevitably think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a drum kit'," states Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "It is the greatest honour. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate people to form a group."

"And thus anyone is invited to be the honorary part of the family."

Historic Nod

The trio are speaking from home, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in contention for the award.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the accolade resonates with the trio.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant step," adds Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the women that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The album was born from a time of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that odd transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The lyrics follow departures and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they aspire to be.

"I love way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to make an effort in blocking the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That developed resilience required a different sonic direction – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the percussion.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Humor

The trio's openness inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating horror stories.

Someone broke up with Este over a medical consideration. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Path

One can easily sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their position in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an international following.

Yet Haim will forever be their primary focus.

"We have been playing music since I was four," concludes Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still making music."
