What We Know About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 lives perished and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have called a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were transported to the hospital.

Those who died have not yet been formally identified, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the individuals who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the attack, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed in the incident, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many are still under care, with five in critical condition. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
