While Beachgoers Escaped Violence, Viral Image Depicts Beach Patrol Running ‘Full Speed’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent local of Bondi, views the famous beach as her personal space. On a recent weekend evening, she, like many neighbors, noticed pops reverberating across the suburb.

“That was the initial assumption, but I thought it was still too bright and you couldn't spot any lights,” she explains. Exiting her home, she witnessed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks they wore signaled a crisis was unfolding.

As she stood on the road, conversing with a duo who had hurried up the hill in their swimwear, she noticed someone approaching behind her. This turned out to be a rescuer, sprinting in the direction of Bondi without shoes from the nearby Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while carrying a medical device.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I spotted this flash of blue,” Ching describes. “He was simply racing by. He was the only one heading in the path that all the others was trying to flee, carrying that big kit and barefoot … He’s running into something that undoubtedly every fibre in your being would signal you to run in the opposite direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just fully pedal to the metal running.”

An Iconic Image of Heroism In the Wake of Chaos

The photo Ching captured of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as a prime example of instances of heroism in the wake of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, says that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to back up the other members at Bondi, as well as to help surf lifesavers, law enforcement and paramedics caring for many the injured.

Local Outpouring and Solidarity

Doolan’s story was part of a broader narrative to come out of the community, with the beach facility beside the scene of the attack transforming into a temporary medical station. Accounts show that other team members were also seen taking action, including going into the surf to rescue people who were struggling.

The team of lifeguards later shared a statement, noting they were “still trying to comprehend what occurred”.

“Thank you all for your thoughtful messages and solidarity. We are overwhelmed by the care directed at our responders,” the group stated. “Eventually, we will share our stories in the hope that it supports those impacted.”

Local Government Recognition

Waverley council, the administrative organization that hires many professional lifeguards, remarked that the staff performed exceptionally from the second the shooting commenced right into late that night.

“People have shared so many powerful stories, but the popular picture of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help preserve life is remarkable,” commented a local official.
